The research group formed of Concordia University students directed by Professor Penny Cousineau, some of whose work we are presenting in this portfolio, is composed of Gema Alberto, Marie-Josée Desrochers, Loren Williams, Emmanuelle Léonard, Sharon Harper, Steve Leroux, Eugénie Robitaille, Xuan-Hui Nguyen, Jackie Wexler, Martin Villeneuve, Nicholas Michel, and Yan Giguère. For almost a year, this group has been working energetically on a pivotal question: Is there currently a new trend in photography in Quebec?

In this issue, CVphoto publishes two texts that are the fruit of the group's reflections. The first, written by Emmanuelle Léonard and Eugénie Robitaille, very effectively summarizes the history of the group's thought processes. The second, written by Sharon Harper, analyzes the effects of relationships and links, such as symbiosis and generational filiation, schools, and genres, on the current corpus of Quebec photography.

We feel that it is important to provide these young people with a forum, to offer them an opportunity to express publicly the results of their work and also to allow interested parties to see the rising generation of future contributors to art journals in Quebec.

We also believe that it is important that studies of this type be accessible to a wider public. This type of research constitutes a basis, a foundation, not only for artists but for photography historians and theoreticians in Quebec.

It was the members of the research group who approached me about this project, and the venture seemed interesting. The publication of this work in the September issue of CVphoto seemed totally appropriate during this year's edition of LE MOIS DE LA PHOTO À MONTRÉAL.
