Twenty Years of Ciel Variable – Part Two
To complement the first part of our look back at the first twenty years of the magazine, published in our last issue, we want here to emphasize two relatively obscure aspects of our history.
The first one is the contribution of photographers to the very first version of the magazine, when its mandate was rooted in amore pronounced collective utopian and social nature. The second aspect is the major contribution of all those who worked, often on a volunteer basis, on producing the magazine Ciel Variable.Without their commitment, devotion to developing the magazine, and recognition of photographic practices, photography would never have had such vitality, and we would not be here to thank them.
The Early Contributors
The first nineteen issues of the magazine were marked by a spirit of collective commitment and a journalistic approach that involved a large number of people. A great many photographs were contributed to the magazine during this period, with some photographs published only to accompany an article or as part of a thematic portfolio. Here is the list of all the early contributors. Some of them were regular contributors to the magazine; a number went on to become significant Quebec photographers. This list complements the one published in our last issue, in which we listed the artists whose portfolios we published and whose exhibitions we reviewed.

Part 2: Backstage at the Magazine
All those who have been involved, at some level, with the trade of publishing know how much work and details are accumulated in each page of a magazine. Over a twenty-year period, taking into account each production stage, it adds up to a huge amount. Here we underline the contribution of everyone who, in one way or another, has helped to produce the magazine throughout the years. The list below includes the editors in chief and publishers of the magazine, the members of the writing committees and boards of directors, the various people, many of them artists and art historians, who contributed to its promotion and distribution, and outside professionals who contributed to its production.
