As the early enthusiasm about the Internet developed, regional places and specificities tended to become blurred. By Jacques Doyon The works presented in this issue form conceptual mappings of territories in the midst of redefinition: the Internet, the natural environment, and circulation hubs. Scott Walden’s Unsettled was produced following a summer spent in Newfoundland photographing the remnants of abandoned coastal communities, casualties of government programs seeking to centralize the new province’s scattered population.  The Bigger Picture: Portraits from Ottawa, organized for the Ottawa Art Gallery by Karen Love, gathers together over 200 Ottawa portraits by 78 image-makers, presented thematically in order to provoke a range of questions about how we understand the idea of a portrait.  Artists have portrayed themselves and their fellows since the beginnings of human representation. The advent of the camera in the nineteenth century augmented portraiture’s accessibility with enormous rapidity and variation, both for those who wished to be portrayed and for those who were impelled to depict.  Given Paul Valery’s belief that architecture could be seen as a process of knowledge that might one day replace philosophy, one wonders what he would have made of the recent photoworks by Arni Haraldsson. Haraldsson is one of several photographers who have, over the past decade and a half, redressed modernism through the “medium of landscape,” and photography through the apertures of architecture.
 In parallel to his continuing dozen-year-long project, which addresses the livedness, context, and peculiarities of space in modernist architecture, Haraldsson’s recent photographic works focus on other grounds inherent to modernism, built space, and our relationships to them.
