PORTFOLIO - Yang li : Uprooted
In 2009, the Three Gorges Dam will have flooded hundreds of square kilometres in central China. Chinese artist Yang Yi will see his hometown, Kaixian, being submerged during the last phase of the project.
Employing mastery of both photography and digital techniques, Yi shows us ghost towns engulfed by water whose inhabitants, fitted out with masks and snorkels, go about their daily affairs. There are shop owners, Mahjong players, even clusters of old-timers chatting on the street. They seem like wandering souls that have reclaimed human bodies in order to restore life to their beloved village. This series constitutes a memorial.
