In today’s world, the blurring between the urban landscape and the mediascape increasingly typifies our experience of our environment. Robert Walker’s body of work illustrates this blurring in a remarkable manner.

The images presented in this portfolio span multiple continents and decades. Over the years, illusionary compositions and vibrant colours have become trademarks of Walker. These traits simultaneously echo and advance the present state of the urban landscape. From Warsaw to New York, Walker’s lens finds and freezes unsettling points of view where foreground and background trade places to confound viewers. Urban dwellers become actors in a strange stage set that is all too real.

Photographing the city and its streets over time, to detect traces of evolution, is a strategy that is still current. Here, it enables us to observe the survival of small businesses, the urban mutation of Vancouver, and the invasive illusion of advertising images. These contemporary ﬂâneurs have an inquisitive eye.
